The University of North Dakota men’s hockey team won the opening game of their National Collegiate Hockey Conference Quarterfinal series with Miami University 5-1 on Friday night in Ralph Engelstad Arena. Freshman goalie Hobie Hedquist stepped in for starter Ludvig Persson to lead the Fighting Hawks (25-10-2) over RedHawks (7-25-3). Hedquist stopped 23 shots in covering for Persson, who was held out for undisclosed reasons. The game saw five different players —Jake Schmaltz, Jackson Blake, Riese Gaber Owen McLaughlin and Jake Livanavage — score for UND. Ryan Sullivan tallied the only Miami goal. RedHawks goalie Logan Neaton had 22 saves. The two teams meet again tonight. (Check out more photos from Russ Hons here.)
