RUSS HONS: Photo Gallery — University Of North Dakota Vs. Western Michigan University

The University of North Dakota men’s hockey team erupted for six goals against Western Michigan University on Saturday night in Ralph Engelstad Arena but surrendered seven en route to a 7-6 National Collegiate Hockey Conference loss in redshirt goalie Caleb Johnson’s first collegiate start before a hometown crowd. The Fighting Hawks (9-10-4 overall, 3-7-2 NCHC) blew a three-goal lead to the No. 14-ranked Broncos (14-9-1, 6-5-1 NCHC) and Luke Grainger, who scored two goals and added four assists. UND led 2-0 in the first period behind goals by Cooper Moore and Zach Kunz before WMU tied the game. Riese Gaber then scored to give UND a 3-2 lead after one period. Chris Jandric and Luke Bast scored in the second period to give the Fighting Hawks a 5-2 lead but the Broncos cut the lead to one goal heading into the third period. WMU took a 6-5 lead in the final frame before Ethan Fritsch tied the game. The Broncos scored the game-winning goal with less than three minutes left in the game to secure the weekend sweep. WMU won 4-0 Friday night. UND’s Johnson finished the night with 28 saves in goal, while WMU netminder Cameron Rowe stopped 19 shots.
