The University of North Dakota men’s hockey team was handed only its second home loss in 28 games, falling 3-2 in overtime to the University of Nebraska-Omaha in National Collegiate Hockey Conference play Friday night in Ralph Engelstad Arena. The loss spoiled Senior Night for eight UND players. The Fighting Hawks (18-5-1) battled back from a 2-0 deficit on goals by Jackson Keane and Jordan Kawaguchi before Taylor Ward, son of former UND standout Dixon Ward, scored the game-winner in overtime for the Mavericks (14-9-1) while on the power play. Kevin Conley and Chayse Primeau scored 14 seconds apart in the second period to give UNO the early two-goal lead. UND senior goalie Peter Thome had 17 saves for UND, while his counterpart, Isaiah Saville, had 26 stops for Omaha. The Fighting Hawks and Mavericks and the six other NCHC teams will come to Ralph Engelstad Arena next weekend for the single-elimination conference tournament. No. 1 seed UND will play No. 8 Miami of Ohio on Friday. The semifinals are set for Monday and the championship game Tuesday. (Check out more photos from Russ Hons here.)
