The University of North Dakota men’s hockey team overcame a 2-0 deficit against Miami University on Saturday night in Ralph Engelstad Arena to score a shootout win in National Collegiate Hockey Conference play. The Fighting Hawks (7-2-3 overall, 2-1-1 NCHC) and the RedHawks (4-5-1 overall, 1-2-1 NCHC) were tied 3-3 after regulation and a 5-on-5 5-minute overtime and a 3-minute 3-on-3 session before a Christian Wolanin snapshot beat Ryan Larkin and UND freshman goalie Peter Thome stopped Miami’s Carson Meyer. The shootout win gave UND five of the six points available in the series after Friday’s 4-1 victory. Tucker Poolman, Dixon Bowen and Shane Gersich scored for the Fighting Hawks in regulation, while Gordie Green, Ryan Siroky and Josh Melnick scored for the RedHawks. Thome finished the game with 20 saves, while Larkin stopped 29 shots. UND, with 8 points in league play, is one point out of first place, shared by Colorado College and Western Michigan, with 9 points each. (Check out more photos from Russ Hons here.)
