The University of North Dakota men’s hockey team fell short in its quest for a second straight NCAA Division I title, dropping a 4-3 double-overtime Midwest Regional decision to Boston University on Friday in Scheels Arena in Fargo. The Fighting Hawks (21-16-3) led 1-0 after one period on a goal by Rhett Gardner, but the Terriers (24-11-3) tied it in the second on a goal by Doyle Somerby. BU took a 3-1 lead early in the third period on goals by Bobo Carpenter and Jakob Forsbacka-Karlsson. UND sent the game to overtime with goals later in the period from Ludvig Hoff and Christian Wolanin. After a scoreless first overtime in which UND appeared to have won the game less than four minutes into the period on a goal by Dixon Bowen that was later disallowed after a replay showed the play was offside, Charlie McAvoy scored the game winner at 11:48 of the second overtime. UND outshot BU 59-28 in the game. Cam Johnson had 25 saves in goal for the Fighting Hawks, while BU freshman goalie stopped 56 shots. (Check out more photos from Russ Hons here.)
