The University of North Dakota men’s hockey team ended a 16-year drought with a convincing 5-1 win over Quinnipiac University in the championship game of the NCAA Frozen Four on Saturday night in Amalie Arena in Tampa, Fla. The Fighting Hawks (34-6-4) added their eighth title ― and their first since 2000 ― before 19,358 fans and left no doubt as to who is the No. 1 team in Division I hockey this season. The CBS line ― Drake Caggiula, Brock Boeser and Nick Schmaltz ― once again led the way for UND. Caggiula, named the tournament’s most outstanding player, scored two goals, Boeser added a goal and three assists and Schmaltz chipped in an assist as the Fighting Hawks dominated the Bobcats (32-2-7) from the start. Austin Polanski and Shane Gersich tallied UND’s other goals. Tim Clifton scored the only Quinnipiac goal. Fighting Hawks goalie Cam Johnson stopped 32 of 33 shots, while the Bobcats Michael Garteig had 31 saves. Check out more photos from Russ Hons here.
