The University of North Dakota men’s hockey team is heading to Tampa, Fla. The Fighting Sioux, behind a three-goal, third period outburst, defeated the University of Michigan 5-2 in the championship game of the NCAA Midwest Regional in Cincinnati’s U.S. Bank Arena to advance for the third straight year to the Frozen Four. Goals by Rhett Gardner, Coltyn Sander and Paul LaDue (empty net) sealed the win for North Dakota (32-6-4) over the Wolverines (25-8-5), whose season ended with the loss. Drake Caggiula and Luke Johnson scored UND’s other goals. J.T. Compeer scored both Michigan goals. Fighting Sioux goalie Cam Johnson, who was named to the all-tournament team along with Caggiula, Luke Johnson and Tucker Poolman, made 25 saves, while Steve Racine stopped 44 for Michigan. The Fighting Sioux will meet the winner of today’s game between Denver University and Ferris State on April 7. Check out more photos from Russ Hons here.
