The University of North Dakota men’s hockey team kicked off its 2021-22 season with a 2-1 exhibition win over Bemidji State University on Saturday night in Ralph Engelstad Arena. The No. 8 Fighting Hawks usually open their season with an exhibition game against a Canadian team, but travel restrictions because of COVID-19 prevented that this year, so the NCAA allowed U.S. college teams to play each other this season. A record exhibition crowd of 11,812 fans watched the game. Jake Sanderson and Riese Gaber scored for UND, while Alex Ierullo scored the lone BSU goal. Fighting Hawks goalie Zach Driscoll, a BSU transfer, had 16 saves, while the Beavers netminders Michael Carr, Mattias Sholl and Gavin Enright combined for 19 saves. UND hosts Niagara next weekend.
