The University of North Dakota men’s hockey team exploded offensively in the second game of their National Collegiate Hockey Conference series with Colorado College, defeating the Tigers 8-1 Saturday night in Ralph Engelstad Arena. The Fighting Hawks (21-3-3 overall, 12-2-2 NCHC) won the series opener 1-0 Friday night. Jordan Kawaguchi led the offensive outburst for UND with two goals and an assist. Also scoring for the Fighting Hawks were Grant Mismash, Collin Adams, Jasper Weatherby, Cole Smith, Mark Senden and Shane Pinto. Connor Mayer was the only Tiger to solve UND goalie Andrew Thome, scoring midway through the third period. Thome, who recorded his second career shutout Friday night, stopped 15 shots. Goalie Matt Vernon, who gave up only one goal Friday night, finished with 23 saves for Colorado College (8-15-1 overall, 3-12-1 NCHC). The Fighting Hawks, the nation’s No. 2-ranked team, most assuredly will regain the top spot, since No. 1 Cornell University lost 5-0 Friday night to Quinnipiac University before defeating Princeton University 5-3 Saturday night. UND also maintained its eight-point lead in the NCHC over second-place Minnesota-Duluth with eight games remaining. The Fighting Hawks have next weekend off before hosting the University of Denver on Feb. 14-15. (Check out more photos from Russ Hons here.)
