Nick Jones had a goal and an assist and Cole Smith tied a 65-year-old record for the fastest goal at the beginning of the third period as the University of North Dakota men’s hockey team completed a sweep of National Collegiate Hockey Conference foe Western Michigan University with a 4-1 win Saturday night in Ralph Engelstad University. Hayden Shaw and Grant Mismash also scored for the Fighting Hawks (10-4-4 overall, 5-2-1 NCHC), while Austin Rueschhoff scored for the Broncos (9-7-1 overall, 5-3 NCHC). UND goalie Cam Johnson stopped 19 shots. Netminder Ben Blacker had 21 saves for WMU. The sweep puts UND in a battle for first place next weekend at St. Cloud State. The Huskies are one point ahead of UND in the standings, with Western Michigan and Denver now tied for third, three points out of first. (Check out more photos from Russ Hons here.)
