TIM MADIGAN: Anything Mentionable — Take Off Your Mask

This jumped out at me from an article in the Atlantic:

“As brainy social animals, human beings evolved to be consummate actors whose survival and ability to reproduce depend on the quality of our performances. We enter the world prepared to perform roles and manage the impressions of others, with the ultimate evolutionary aim of getting along and getting ahead in the social groups that define who we are.”

So true. But as a species, I think we are just now starting to understand how ultimately wrong-minded and actually self-destructive that is.

Fred Rogers led the way. He invited the world to take off our masks and share what he called the “essential invisibles,” “Anything mentionable is manageable.” He knew that that the often painful reality behind the act is what human beings have most in common.”What is most personal is most universal.”

Let’s take Fred up on his admonition and make this a more courageously authentic world.
