The University of North Dakota men’s hockey team, already a lock for a No. 1 seed in next weekend’s NCAA tournament, was handed a 4-2 setback by the University of Minnesota-Duluth in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference Frozen Faceoff semifinals Friday night in Minneapolis’ Target Center. The Bulldogs, ranked No. 16 nationally and seeded fourth in the tournament, fell behind 1-0 in the first period to the No. 1-rated Fighting Hawks but reeled off three straight second-period goals before UND closed the gap to 3-2. UMD (18-14-5) scored the only goal of the third period. Nick Schmaltz and Troy Stecher scored UND’s goals, while Dominic Toninato scored twice for UMD, and Alex Iafallo and Austin Farley added single tallies. Cam Johnson stopped 22 shots in goal for the Fighting Hawks (30-6–3), while UMD’s Kasimir Kaskisuo also had 22 saves. Duluth meets St. Cloud State (30-8-1), a 4-2 winner over Denver University (23-9-5) on Friday night, at 7:38 tonight in Frozen Face-off championship game. The Fighting Hawks and the Pioneers play in the third-place game 3:30 p.m. Check out more photos from Russ Hons here.
