The No. 4-ranked University of North Dakota men’s hockey team, behind its high-flying first line of Drake Caggiula, Nick Schmaltz and Brock Boeser, took it to ninth-rated Denver University on Friday night in Ralph Engelstad Arena, scoring a 5-1 win before a sellout crowd of 11,768. The “CBS” line combined for six points as the Fighting Hawks upped its National Collegiate Hockey Conference record to 6-1-0 (13-2-2 overall). The Pioneers fell to 3-1-1 and 7-4-2. Boeser, a freshman, scored two goals, senior Caggiula chipped in a goal and two assists and sophomore Schmaltz added a goal. (Sophomore winger Austin Poganski scored UND’s other goal.) The line now has 17 goals and 22 assists for 39 points in the last seven games and is a gaudy plus-42 on the plus/minus chart measuring offensive and defensive effectiveness. Denver’s lone goal was scored by its captain, Grant Arnold. UND junior defenseman Keaton Thompson had his first career multipoint game with three assists. Caggiula, the NCHC’s leading goal scorer, became UND’s first player since 2012 to reach the 100-point career mark with his third-period assist. Fighting Hawks goalie Cam Johnson had 22 saves, while Pioneers net minder Evan Cowley had 17. The two teams conclude their series tonight at 7:07. Check out more photos from Russ Hons here.
