The University of North Dakota men’s hockey team, in need of a bounce-back performance after a 7-4 loss Friday night, gained a split in their National Collegiate Hockey Conference series with a 3-2 come-from-behind win over the University of Minnesota-Duluth on Saturday night in Amsoil Arena in Duluth. Just like Friday night, when Westin Michaud gave them a 1-0 first-period lead, the Fighting Hawks (19-3-3 overall, 10-2-2-2 NCHC, fell behind 2-1 in the third period only to rally behind goals by Matt Kierstad and Jonny Tychonick to secure the victory. Luke Loheit and Scott Perunovich scored goals for the Bulldogs (13-9-2 overall, 8-4-2-0 NCHC), who fell to third place in the NCHC standings behind UND and the University of Denver. UND goalie Peter Thome stopped 21 shots, while UMD netminder Hunter Shepard had 20 saves. The Fighting Hawks, who lead Denver by six points in the league standings, return home next weekend to face Colorado College. (Check out more photos from Russ Hons here.)
