TIM MADIGAN: Anything Mentionable — ‘Amigo,’ He Said

I was getting toward the end of my long walk on a typically scorching Texas morning when I approached a road construction site. I passed a Hispanic man standing in the bed of a pickup.

“Amigo!” he said.

I assumed he was speaking to a co-worker and I kept walking.

Then he called out again.

“Amigo!”

When I turned, he was smiling and holding a bottle of water in my direction. I smiled back.

“No thanks,” I said, and turned to finish my walk.

That was Wednesday but I’ve been thinking about that little exchange ever since. In this troubled time, it reminds us of our true natures, of who we are as brothers and sisters.

Gracias, amigo.

Humanity can win if we just allow the space.
