No. 1-ranked St. Cloud State University claimed a 3-1 National Collegiate Hockey Conference win over the University of North Dakota men’s hockey team Friday night in Ralph Engelstad Arena. A first-period goal by Nick Jones had given the Fighting Hawks (12-11-1 overall, 6-7 NCHC) a 1-0 lead, but the Huskies (18-3-2 overall, 10-1-2 NCHC) tied the game late in the second period on a goal by Micah Miller. A third-period goal at 13:33 by Patrick Newell gave SCSU the lead for good. The Huskies later added an empty-net, power-play goal by Blake Lizotte with less than two minutes left in the game. UND goalie Adam Scheel stopped 33 shots, while St. Cloud’s David Hrenak had 14 saves. The two teams meet again tonight. (Check out more photos from Russ Hons here.)
