The University of North Dakota men’s hockey team shut out the University of Nebraska-Omaha 4-0 in the opening round of the National Collegiate Hockey Conference playoffs Friday night in Ralph Engelstad Arena. The Fighting Hawks (15-12-10 overall) received goals from Shane Gersich, Christian Wolanin, Nick Jones and Joel Janatuinen to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series. A win tonight would advance UND to the NCHC Frozen Faceoff next weekend in St. Paul. The Mavericks, who were No. 13 in the Pairwise rankings (the Fighting Hawks were No. 14), dropped to 17-16-2. UND goaltender Cam Johnson, who recorded his third shutout of the season, stopped 25 shots, while UNO’s Evan Weninger had 30 saves. Between the first and second periods, Olympic heroes and gold medal winners Jocelyn Lamoureux-Davidson and Monique Lamoureux-Morando were introduced at center ice.
