Despite spectacular goals by defensemen Christian Wolanin and Colton Poolman, the University of North Dakota men’s hockey team dropped a 4-2 National Collegiate Hockey Conference decision to Colorado College on Friday night in Ralph Engelstad Arena. The win for the Tigers (12-11-4 overall, 6-8-3 NCHC) left them just one point behind the Fighting Hawks (12-9-8 overall, 6-7-4 NCHC) in the league standings. Wolanin scored his goal on a penalty shot and assisted on Poolman’s brilliant solo rush—  both coming in the second period to tie the game —  but the Tigers answered quickly after both scores and added an empty-netter in the last minute of the game to defeat the Fighting Hawks. Troy Conzo scored two goals for CC, while Alex Pernitsky and Westin Michaud had one each. UND starting goalie Cam Johnson stopped 11 shots before being pulled after Conzo’s second goal. Backup goalie Andrew Thome had 14 saves in relief. CC goalie Alex LeClerc had 34 saves. The two teams meet again tonight at 7:07 in the Ralph. (Check out more photos from Russ Hons here.)
