The University of North Dakota men’s hockey team’s scoring woes continued Friday night as the Fighting Hawks dropped a 3-1 National Collegiate Hockey Conference game to St Cloud State University before 11,682 fans  in Ralph Engelstad University. Tucker Poolman scored the lone goal for UND (7-9-1-0 NCHC, 14-11-3 overall), which was on the verge of facing back-to-back shutout losses for the first time in school history as well as its fifth shutout loss of the season, which would have been a record. Jacob Benson, a former star at Grand Forks Red River High School, opened the scoring for the Huskies (7-9-1 NCHC, 13-13-1 overall) at 11:25 of the first period, and Jimmy Schuldt added another early in the second period before Poolman closed the gap at 8:16 of the third period. But just 28 seconds later, a shot by SCSU’s Robby Jackson deflected off the facemask of linemate Ryan Poehling and past UND goalie Matt Hrynkiw, who finished with 16 saves, to complete the scoring. Jeff Smith stopped 28 shots for St. Cloud. The two teams meet again at 7 tonight. (Check out more photos from Russ Hons here.)
