Unheralded

The University of North Dakota men’s hockey team surrendered two first-period goals to Bemidji State University on Friday night in Ralph Engelstad Arena, and things were looking a little bleak for the home team. But fueled by sophomore Brock Boeser’s natural hat trick — the third goal coming on a penalty shot a 12:52 of the third period — the Fighting Hawks edged the Beavers 3-2 before 11,816 fans to run their record to 4-0 on the season. The Beavers lost for the first time this season, falling to 4-1. Phillip Marinaccio and Brett Beauvais scored early for BSU to put UND in the hole, but Boeser, a first-round draft pick of the Vancouver Canucks of the National Hockey League, scored on a second-period power play and at even strength early in the final frame to set up his winning tally. BSU goalie Michael Bitzer from Moorhead had 33 saves, while Cam Johnson stopped 16 shots. The two teams meet again tonight at 7:10 in REA. Check out more photos from Russ Hons here.
