The University of North Dakota men’s hockey team said goodbye for another season to Ralph Engelstad Arena on Saturday night, easily handling Colorado College 5-1 to sweep its National Collegiate Hockey Conference playoff series with the Tigers, sending the Fighting Hawks to this weekend’s Frozen Faceoff in Minneapolis, where they will meet the University of Minnesota-Duluth at 7:38 p.m. Friday in Target Center. North Dakota (30-5-3) received first-period goals from Nick Schmaltz, Joel Janatuinen, Hayden Shaw and Drake Caggiula and never looked back. Austin Polanski and CC’s Matt Hansen traded goals in the second period to round out the scoring. Cam Johnson made 22 saves in goal for UND, while Jacob Tehama and Derek Shatzer combined to stop 23 Fighting Hawks shots. Colorado College ended its season with a 6-29-1 record. Check out more photos from Russ Hons here.
