It’s no secret that University of North Dakota football coach Bubba Schweigert likes to recruit North Dakota kids.

Elijah Grady, surrounded by his parents Wayne and Jennifer Fox, and grandfather, Tommy Mandan, signs a national letter of intent to play football for the University of North Dakota.

That was no more than evident at Wedneday’s press conference announcing the signings of 28 new players to the school’s program on National Signing Day.

Schweigert, who played nine-man football at Zeeland, N.D., was extremely excited about the signing of Elijah Grady of New Town, N.D., who officially committed to the university and its football team. Grady was one of six N.D. recruits.

“He’s a really fine young person,” Schweigert said of Grady, a 6-foot-5, 295-pounder who was recruited as an offensive lineman.

“We like his ability. He played on a state-contending basketball team last year” that’s doing well again this year. “He is really balanced and has good feet.”

Among his accomplishments, he was  named to the All-State football team in 2014 and All-Region team 2011-2014. He also was All-District and All-Region in basketball and won a track state championship in discus and had several other state finishes. He also boxed competitively at the national level winning numerous awards.

Academically, Grady has done very well, making the honor roll throughout high school.

Grady was recruited by a number of colleges but ultimately decided on UND. When asked about it, he said that he “has always wanted to go to UND.” His father, Wayne Fox, attended the school. Grady hopes to pursue a degree in nursing with an emphasis on physical therapy.
